Meet Mrs. Iker!
The morning routine I follow to get me jazzed for class is to dance. The first thing I do every morning is turn on some of my favorite music. I usually listen to either 80’s rock or country. Then I dance around as I am getting ready for school. This gets me in a good mindset to tackle the day ahead.
The students would be surprised to find out that before I was a teacher, I was a professional sign maker and screenprinter. I lettered planes, trains and automobiles. I also made many banners and signs out of a truck during big events across the Eastern part of the United States! Some of my work is still visible in the area.
If I won the lottery, I would really like to travel. There are many cities, states, and countries I would like to experience. I would love to have the opportunity to visit schools in these places to see how kids learn there as well as just hang out with them.
What inspires me is when I can reach a student. When I see that they are as excited about learning something as I am about teaching them.
One of the trends that baffles me is technology. The wonderful aspect about technology is the convenience it brings to our lives. The problem with technology is that it makes students not try as much as they may have in the past.
I absolutely love being around the students at CNE. There are many students who I have been able to connect with through just listening to them and opening up dialogue.
If I could pass on any wisdom to my students and the students at CNE it would be this: when it comes down to being right or being kind, always choose kindness!
