As the school year kicks off, you need to start tackling your study habits. Here are a few ways to move the ball in the right direction;
1. Just like preparing to win a football game, the biggest element to studying is to remember to take time to fully prepare, to practice!
If you have a test over chapters 1-3 then you should start at least three days in advance. The biggest area that students get caught up in is not fully evaluating the amount of time they need to study for a test.
2. Just like the cadence the quarterback calls out tells the other 10 players on his team what to do and when you need to find easy rhymes, sayings, or words to help you remember things.
Find ways to help you remember lists, dates, names, or times by making a quick saying that will stick with you. This is called a “mnemonic”. For example, in Mr. Thompson's World History classes, students learn to associate the word "MANIA" with remembering the causes of the First World War. ("Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism, and Assassination").
3. Watch out for trick plays on 4th down! Be careful not to memorize your study sheets right before the test.
While you want to memorize the material you don’t want to memorize your study sheet. Sometimes you can only regurgitate material when it's asked of you in the order of your study sheet. However, we all know that the majority of your tests will not be in the exact order of your study sheet. Therefore, to keep yourself from memorizing your study sheet have a friend quiz you. Have them mix up the material on your study sheet and quiz you to be sure you have memorized the material. If you find yourself struggling with memorization of your materials you may also try flash cards. These will allow you to mix up the material and do a quick study.
Good luck and Go Rockets!
