Important Information for Students and Families
On Monday, April 8th, Clermont Northeastern Schools will be closed to allow everyone the opportunity to witness a rare celestial event: a total solar eclipse. This means the moon will completely block the sun for a short period, creating a spectacular sight!
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event for Ohio
This total solar eclipse is a particularly special event for residents of Ohio. The last time a total eclipse was visible in our state was in 1806, and the next one won't happen until 2099! That means this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of us to experience this awe-inspiring phenomenon firsthand.
Understanding the Eclipse
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on our planet. During a total eclipse, the moon completely covers the sun, creating a temporary nighttime effect. This is a fascinating opportunity to learn more about astronomy and the movements of celestial bodies.
Planning Your Eclipse Experience
Since school will be closed, here are some ways you can make the most of this event:
Research the Eclipse: Websites like NASA (https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/) offer great resources to understand the science behind eclipses. Learn about the path of totality and the specific timing for our area.
Prepare for Safe Viewing: Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. It's crucial to use certified eclipse viewing glasses. Never rely on sunglasses or homemade filters. These are not safe!
Plan Activities: Consider building a pinhole projector (find instructions online) to safely project the eclipse onto a surface. You can also have an eclipse-themed gathering with friends and family, complete with snacks and activities.
Safety Reminders:
Never look directly at the sun without certified eclipse viewing glasses.
Adult supervision is essential for younger children during the eclipse.
