Dr. Andrew McFarland
A True Life-Long Learner
Andy graduated from Clermont Northeastern High School in 1958. He was a member of the 1st graduating class at CNE High School after several smaller schools were combined. After high school, Andy earned a scholarship to attend Oberlin College. After graduating with honors, he earned a doctorate in political science at the University of California at Berkeley.
After earning his Ph.D., Andy began a career in teaching that saw him have a lasting impact on the lives of over 4,000 students. He taught at the University of California, the University of Chicago, and finally the University of Illinois-Chicago where he taught for over 30 years. He was incredibly well-liked by his students and known for the support he provided to ensure they were successful.
In addition to teaching Andy wrote 6 books and co-authored 3 more in the field of political science. He is considered a leading expert on special interest groups and how they impact the American political system. The impact of his teaching can be seen in the large number of former students working in local governments, teaching, or serving as community leaders.
